Why do I always feel so inadequate, so not good enough?

Why do I always feel so inadequate, so not good enough?

Because I am always trying to put myself right and it doesn’t work.

We live in a world which spends its time telling us that we are not good enough.  We can spend a lifetime believing that the who we are is inadequate, is unworthy, is lacking.  We can therefore direct all our energies to self- improvement, trying to fill the void, put right what we and the world deem to be wrong, looking always for something external to make us feel whole.

The problem with that is that we are looking in the wrong place for the solution.  What if we are already good enough?  What if the who we already are is absolutely fine?  What if, heaven forbid, there is no improvement to make but rather simply a realisation, an actualisation, of who we are and have always been?  What about if we started to be kind to ourselves and show ourselves some compassion as opposed to being self critical and setting ourselves higher and higher standards?

I wrote “THE WHAT IS” to remind me that I am already all I need to be.  If I spend a lifetime becoming who I already am that would be a life well spent.  It is not easy to resist society’s messages.  It is not easy to accept that I am already here, but neither is the alternative.  Self acceptance and self discovery may not be as fashionable as self improvement, but it makes for a more exciting and ultimately more satisfying journey.

What about you?

  • What do you think about the What Is?
  •  How do you feel about self acceptance as opposed to self improvement?
  • How easy do you find it to be kind to yourself?
  • What can you share that might help others?

Please leave your comments.  I would love to hear from you.

Accepting the what is, how good would that feel

To relinquish the struggle, to combat the real

And let go the pretences that muddy each day

As we feign to be other and from ourselves stray.

What good does pretending essentially do?

We can play act a little, but it isn’t true

As it distances us from authenticity

As I seek to be somebody other than me.

We can dress up in costumes and take on a part

But it isn’t for real if it’s not from the heart,

It’s a sham, a performance that only pretends

And we’re left with a hollowness when it all ends.

So let’s accept the what is, the who we’ve become,

We’re a sum of our parts so let’s embrace that sum

And be kind to the person the world has worked on,

And let go of pretence and be glad that it’s gone.
